About Rafael Angulo

Rancid elegance, impulse, organic mastery...

Rafael Angulo, who was born in Santiago de Compostela, Spain, raised in Orlando, Florida, received his BFA from Ringling College of Art and Design in 2001 where he was awarded the honor of being selected for the prestigious "Best of Ringling" show where he won the jurors choice award in 2001. That same year he was commissioned to do his first scenic backdrop for Telemundos TV show "Communidad 2000", where he was also interviewed on the show as well. In 2002, Rafael began his related career in the Scenic Arts.

In 2004, Rafael was the "Featured Artist" at Mpyre Gallery, located Uptown New Orleans, Louisiana. The majority of the space at the gallery was committed to Rafael's works. 80% of his works, including several large paintings, etchings, silk screens, lithographs, etc., were lost as a result of hurricane Katrina. This greatly decreased Rafael’s entire collection. It did, however, open the door for the opportunity to explore new ideas of work. Upon his return to Florida, Rafael painted several new pieces and exhibited at numerous venues as well as involve himself in numerous mosaic creations and large commercial projects. Shortly after, Rafael was interviewed by Take Down Magazine regarding his work and his process and included a nice spread with related imagery.

In 2008 Rafael was featured in  WMFE TV's "The Art's Connection" in which they showed the artist working in his studio and gave a candid interview that touched on his transition after moving from New Orleans and Hurricane Katrina's effect as well as the effect of his father's passing at the same time. A predecessor to the interview was his involvement in the "Abstract Art" show at the Orlando Museum of Art.

2009 Rafael dove deeper into the Scenic Arts as one of the scenic painters for "The Wizardy World of Harry Potter" at Universal Studios, Florida, which has proved to be highly successful since its unveiling. This led to numerous opportunities in the field throughout the Southeastern United States. In 2010 He was the Lead Scenic painter for Six Flags Over Georgia's "Halloween Fright Night" in Atlanta, where he orchestrated and designed hundreds of props throughout the park and painted the presidium for the stage show "CarnEvil". It was on his travels in the Scenic Arts that Rafael learned to fuse his two careers/passions, by incorporating his artistic mazes into his work. Mazes provided a portable studio since they can be created anywhere on the road as opposed to his paintings which require long studio time and space. So on his off time he learned to use his mazes to make up for a lack of a proper studio. What was born was something new and real and not seen before.

Rafael continues to work in the Scenic Arts as a freelancer and has worked all over the country with Starz TV, Hanna Barbara, Universal Studios, Warner Brothers Studios, Sea World, Six Flags Adventure Parks and more but his Mazes have now taken a life of their own and paved the path to many new exciting opportunities to come.
